Blog Question for 8th Grade

Was there an alternative to going to war with the South?  What was it?  If no alternative, then was it handled in the best way?  Must be 40 words at least.

  1. I am not positive about any other way. But, since they did go to war I think there were things that Abraham Lincoln could have done better to prevent war. He basically said and forced the the South (but they still rebelled) not to leave the Union. In the war they could have done a little more planning in their strategy, especially after going through 2 generals you would think the 3rd would take the time, but he didn’t and the 4th finally did.

    Peace,
    Cameron R

(the first to post I think)

  2. There was no alternative to going to war with the South. They wanted slavery and they would take all the black people and overwork them and sell them. The North didn’t think this was right and so they went to war with the south. This was not handled in the best way because Americans killed each other over black peoples’ rights. What they should have done was handled it peacefully and let the black people have a choice of what they wanted to do.

  3. I don’t think there was not an alternative to the war with the South. The Best way to handle it probably was to send the Troops better weapons and send A spy to spy on the south So that they knew what they were doing and could be on guard when they attacked them. Also they Should have planed to take out their strong leaders during battle so that they would have to find knew Leaders. Some important Leaders they would want to take out are the Generals and the president of the Confederacy. They should also wear green uniforms because they blend in more with the surrounding of the battles.

  4. Blake Barens Says:

No, there was no other alternative besides going to war with the south. The south wouldn’t have given slavery up without war. The way I probabaly would of handled this is, I would send my troops in massive numbers that work in our favor and would make sure I had a good plan and the troops are familiar with the ground already. How I would make sure that they are familiar with the ground is, I would send one small group of 2 or 3 and have them figure out were we could get the cover when we attack before the actual battle began. I would spread my soldiers out and send them in in different waves. I think this would be the best strategy to win the war and end slavery.

  5. Sean Rivello Says:

I cannot think of an alteritive route going to war with the south but I do not think it was handled in the best way. I think that killing your own brother, friend, or any part of your family is not a great way to deal with not having slaves in the North but in the South. I think that instead of going to war for this reason, they should have compromised with each other. Instead of them being slaves, and had no rights as a citizen in the South, they should have just been like modern day house keepers or cleaners that had rights as a citizen. Well thats my opinion.

  6. There were many alternatives to the war. They could have left the south leave the union but the north wanted to stay unified with the south. They could have also talked and worked together an agreement. Even though the war ended up being for the good of our country so many people died and were injured that I think that it should have been worked out in a more safe way than war.

  7. Hayden O'Leary Says:

I don’t think there was an alternative. They had to go to war because most of the south secceded from the union. If president Lincoln wanted to keep the nation together he had to go to war with the south. They had to wait for the south to attack so that they were fighting on their home ground.

  8. Hey…..

How is everybody’s week going so far??? I don’t think that there was an alternative going to war with the south. There is really no other way they could have decided it. They couldn’t have played rock paper scissors. That is all luck. At least when they went to war it was all fair game. I agree with Cameron that there were many things that Lincoln could have done better with to prevent war. I also agree with Blake, that the south wouldn’t have gone down without a fight.

    Tay ❤
    🙂

  9. They could have talked about it. They should have negotiated it rather than just going in and winging it. If they talked about it, they would have been a lot stronger and more equipped. They couldnt have played a game to decide the decision, but the least thing that they could have done was to talk about everything.

  10. Riley Boulger Says:

i think that there was an alternative to going to war with the south. They could have passed a no slavery law, and reenforced that law with some type of a punishment (a few years in prison). Then if slavery did not stop, they could have considered going to war.

  11. Elaina Ralston Says:

I don’t think there was an alternative to go going to war with the south. I agree with Cameron that there were many things that Lincoln could have done better to prvent war. But like Blake said they wouldn’t have gone down with out a fight. Since they wouldn’t go down with out a fight the North needed to win fair and square and they did. I don’t thinking talking would have worked in this situation because something could have been said that somebody else missunderstood. Which would soon start up another fight and it could keep going. I also think that sending some one out to look at the other armies to see how many we should send out is a good idea. That way you could send the right amount and not loose to many.

  12. HEY!
There were a couple of different alternatives for there not to have been war. First, the union could have let the confederates make their “own country.” The south wanted to form their own country to begin with also. Another alternative was for both north and south to agree on something for example, they could have servants whom they payed, or something like that. Lastly, the north or south could have either said, “We will join slavery”, or, “we wont go through with slavery.” K bye!!!

  13. FilmoreISnAZN (daniel shishino) Says:

Well, In my opinion, I don’t believe there was an alternative to war. Slavery was already determined to not be in the north. As a northern, Abe Lincoln opposed slavery and did not want it in the American territories. As president, he wanted nothing to do with slavery. The South, though, wanted slavery and did all they could to have slavery. I really do not believe it was handled in the best way possible though. I cannot really think about another way to it though. Considering the South randomly attacked the North’s people. So, If I were Lincoln, I would have talked to the President of the South first. See if there was an alternative to war and see if he could send more food and other stuff to Fort Sumter. If not, I would have proceeded as Lincoln did. I would have just sent the reinforcements and declare war!

  14. I think there was no alternative to going to war against the south. And I also agree with Cam and TayK that Lincoln should have done a lot better about this situation. If he really did not want to start war he definatly needed to try harder. They should have at least tried to compromised with the South about this. And if that didn’t work, then ya go to war, but with BETTER strategies. It’s like they went to war without thinking this out. That’s my opinion.

  15. Tyler Van Matre Says:

I don’t think there was an alternative to going to war. I also don’t think was the best way to handle everything, but it definitely was going to end up in a civil war. Since the Union just wanted to get rid of all slavery, there was no way to do that. They were going to have to go to war with the Confederates. President Lincoln also didn’t want to lose the Union so he had act quick by starting the Civil War. The Union knew that the Confederates were going to attack sometime, and then they attacked Fort Sumter. After that battle, the Union knew that it was time to save our country.

    Tyler

  16. I feel that there was no alternative to going to war with the south! The south wanted slavery and they were not willing negotiate! Also I think Lincoln should have acted more quickly when he heard the south was about to declare war. I think that that the north should have gone into the south with a good portion of their armies and artillery and run them over. I think that this would have worked well because the north had more men and weaponry and they could have destroyed the south in one great battle!!

  17. newmanintown Says:

There was no alternative way to renegotiate with the south. It was the only way, fight and tell them it is not right to “use” people. Sometimes, action speak louder than words. Actually, they almost always speak louder than words. People needed to learn that using people is not the only way to make profits. All people are people, no matter there race, ethnicity, or age. They are all equal. Stop judging people and using them.

  18. NIKI KHAJEH Says:

i dont think there was an alternative, I also dont think they handled it the best way that they could, because they could have sneaked up on the south and attacked there settlement in the middle of the night with there best weapons and with their troops. And the Union knew that they couldn’t end slavery, and if they did the south would bring illegal slaves into their territories without the Union knowing. And i dont think going into the Civil War was the best thing to do because if they didnt i dont think that our county would be united today.

    Niki

  19. I can not really think of another way…but war isn’t always the answer, I’m sure there could have been another way besides war. I’m sure that they knew that they were going to go to war soon…but they could have made a peace treaty, or some sort of contract… War wasn’t the smartest choice i guess you could say…because people ARE going to die, and it is very very sad. Especially if it was a relative or friend.

  20. Ashley Abel Says:

I think that there wasn’t an alternative with going to the war with the South. I don’t think they handled it the best way though. But they did not really have a choice considering all they wanted was to get rid of slavery. So they went to war but they had the had vantage because they had more strengths.

  21. Personally, I don’t think there was any alternative to war. I don’t necessarily agree with the decision to go to war, brother against brother, but I don’t think there was any other way to resolve the problem. The South had already seceded and could have become an enemy to the North. No matter what, the South was going to be hostile and stubborn. They did not want to give up slavery because that’s what kept the wealthy going. Their slaves’ labor was the only thing that kept their money flowing. That was why they were so reluctant to abolishing slavery. Without their slaves, they would be penniless. The only thing even remotely close to an alternative would’ve been for Abraham Lincoln to figure out some way to make sure the Southern farmers didn’t go out of business, while still abolishing slavery. I just don’t have any idea how he could’ve done that. So that’s my opinion.

  22. I don’t think there was an alternative going into the war. I believe that the only way they could have got rid of slavery was to go into war, because if they didn’t the South would never settle a truth with the North because it was either going to go the North’s way or the South’s way. I also believe that the war strategy for the Union was very effective. The plan to squeeze the south like an anaconda was really smart. They could have made a better plan, but the “Anaconda Plan” was a pretty good plan. I also think that Lincoln was smart to attack quickly because the South were planning an attack and eventually they would, like when they attacked Fort Sumter. In the end I believe their really was no alternative.

  23. The-Cooliest-Person-Ever (aka nicole) Says:

    hey,
i think that if the south wasn’t so lazy and had to make normal people do things for them none of this would happen, i think that its all the souths fault for the civil war. I don’t think it there was an alternative, but i think that the north should have attacked first, i think the north had the right to attack because the south was not being smart and needed to be attacked for there stupid decisions like making people work for them and calling them salves when they are normal people to. i think that going to war with the south was a good idea, somethings could have been handled diffrently, but war over all was a good idea becuse salvery is wrong.

  24. Renee Stewart Says:

I don’t think there was an alternative to war. If they had let the south leave the union, it would have fallen apart. Plus the issue with slavery would not have gone away until it was abolished, even if they were two different countries. The only way they could have handled it better was if they had prepared for a longer war. Both of them had thought it would be a matter of months, and a quick win. The south assumed they would get foreign help. They might have won if they had gotten enough troops, money, and weapons without the help of others.

  25. I think there was no alternative to going to war. The North could’ve prolonged it, but couldn’t have stopped it. They could’ve kept giving into the South, but then the South would just throw a fit every time they didn’t get what they wanted. But you can’t necessarily blame the South because it wasn’t their fault they hated the idea of not having slaves. It was the only way they knew how to live, and without slaves, their farms would fail. Still, I do not think it was handled in the best way possible, by the South, because they seemed to overreact a little bit, and be a little immature about it. I think that Lincoln did the best that he could do to avoid and compromise with the South, even though there was little he could do.

  26. I don’t think there was any alternative to the war with the South. I don’t think they handled it in the best way though. All they wanted to do was get rid of slavery. I don’t think the did the best thing, they should have talked about it or something. Abraham Lincoln could have done things better than he did.

    Reid

  27. Justin Tidwell Says:

I think there was no alternative but to go to war. I think this is so because the south needed slaves for there economy and with out them there states would fall any ways. So it was either win through war or have no slaves at all. The south did not know how to work without slaves they never had to do the dirty work for themselves!

  28. I don’t think there was another alternative from going to war. I think they should of attacked them from all directions. uyr the other army would not know where to shoot them from. They would have to surrender. I would also use the sneak attack method. They would not expect it.

  29. Elaina Ralston Says:

Ok so I posted earlier and it didn’t work…..I don’t think there was an alternative to war. I agree with Blake that the South would not go down with out fight. So we needed to fight them for this to be over. I also agree with Cameron that they should have done a little more planning or had a better strategy. They should send some one over like a spy to see how many people they needed to send in so they wouldn’t loose as many people in war. You can’t really talk an issue this big out because something could come of the wrong way which could spark another fight. So they would just keep going and they would have more things to talk threw then when they started…..But that’s just my opinoin !!!!

  30. There could have been an alternative. They should have just kicked the slavery states out. They never would have changed their views on slavery anyway. If they had left out the states, then they wouldn’t have thousands of people die. The other states could have formed their own country. today there are countries that have people who want slavery and we aren’t fighting them to get them to join us. The union didn’t need the south’s cotton buisness because they already had more buisness up north. PLUS!! slavery is completely wronng and people who were willing to go against the constitution should have been kicked out of the country. bottom line those who favor slavery were not meant to stay in the united states.

  31. i don’t think there was an alternative to going to war with the South. They should’ve talked about it before actually going to war. All they wanted was to get rid of slavery. Killing your friends and family is not a way to decide this. Since president lincoln wanted to keep the union he had to go to war quick. That is my opinion.

  32. I don’t think there was an alternative to going to war. I think that there could have been a better way to handle it. I don’t think that you should just start fighting. You need to try to solve your problem first. But, President Lincoln had to go to war because he wanted to keep the union. The only way that I would agree with going to war was that they wanted to end slavery. That is my opinion.

  33. The Beast 11 Says:

I also think maybe there was not an alternative to they had to go to war because the north was fed up with the South having the slaves. The north wanted an end to slaves, but the south still wanted them. And if the north tried to stop it the south would just get mad about it. So maybe that was the reason they had to go to war. Maybe that was the only way of settling it. And that is what i think about the war!

  34. The Beast 11 Says:

the beast was me Mr. weinrich Taylor m!

  35. Jessie Shubin Says:

    Hey….

I hope there is always an alternative to war because I don’t like people killing each other. They could of just talked about keeping slavery and had an election, instead of going into battle. I can’t imagine people shooting their relatives. Maybe they could of just flipped a coin to see who won. I think the South wouldn’t vote to get rid of slavery, so there would have to be some kind of competition to determine if they kept slavery or got rid of it.

  36. I really don’t think there was an alternative to go to war. But I think Lincoln didn’t do his best to prolong the war. Sure he wanted to keep the Union but i think they could of made a deal about slavery by treating them like slaves and sure enough they would have no slavery. And turn over a new leaf.

  37. nathan kuchta Says:

I do not think that there was an alternative to going to war with the South. However, I do think that the men could’ve handled it in a better way than they did. Even though I think that it is horrible that brothers fought brothers and friends fought friends, eventually, there would’ve been a war. I think that each side had a fair chance at winning and defending their region. There was really no other way to handle the situation rather that fighting.

  38. volleyballgirl04 Says:

I don’t really think there was an alternative to going to war. Lincoln definately was not going to give in to seccesion and his only option he saw was to go to war. He probably could have considered other options but would not have had as quick of results as he had by going to war.

  39. Oops, Volleyabllgirl04 is Kennedi.

  40. There was no other option but to go to war.The only alternative was for the north to go up against the south to remain as one union”The united states of america. If they wanted to get out of war they couldn’t.

  41. AndrewMoreno Says:

There probably wasn’t an alternative route in the south. It was pick and choose. Brothers against each other either way throughout all famliys. A plan would have been a great way to solve this problem. Although the south fought for slavery not wanting to give it up. Slavery was probably needed for the south for what they want to achieve. No, It was not handled the best way.

  42. Matt Stumme Says:

I don’t think there was another alternative from going to war. I think they should of attacked them from all directions. Then the other army would not know where to shoot them from. They would have to surrender. I would also use the sneak attack method. They would not expect it. I also thought the south needed the slaves.

  43. I don’t think there was any alternitive for the Civil War because, first of all, we tried using documents but it didn’t seem to help. It looks to me as if the Civil War was the last option and i think it worked out well. I also think it was handeled in the best way they could. I t probably wasn’t the fairest way, but all the other ways didn’t work.

  44. I also agree that there was no alternative for going to war with the South. The South was being adamant in using slaves and seceding from the Union. So the North believed that the only way to get them to stop was through force. Even though going to war with the South may not have been the best solution, at least it worked.

  45. i don’t think there was an alternative to go to war with each other. (The North and South) They live in the same country and brothers might be fighting brothers. They should have talked about the mix-ups and differences and they might have not even gone to war. That is my opinion.

  46. I don’t think that there was an alternative going to war with the south. but, there wasn’t really another way to settle it. Also, Ab. Lincoln really didn’t have a choice to not do the war because the country woud’ve been split. The southerners wanted to keep slavery and the Northern wanted to free the slaves. It made a bad situation because relatives and friends were fighting against eachother in the war.

  48. Ddaphadill Sparkle Says:

I don’t believe that there was an alternative to going to war because the South wanted to leave the Union. Also, with all of the bitter feelings and random attacks on Northeners, something had to be done. Abe Lincoln decided war was the answer. This would get rid of slavery once and for all. However, bitterness would remain for a long time. Even though I am not a violent person, I would be lying if I told you I wouldn’t do the exact thing. Furthermore, if there had been no war, we would currently have two nations within the United States of America. This would cause major issues and eventually lead to war. The way I see it is, we could have had the Civil War then, or now. I do not see any effective alternatives either.
    Evan Garcia

  49. I personally think that there was not an alternative to the Civil War because the Southerners loved having there own personal slaves. Well, on the other hand the Northerners hated that there were slaves. So they settled the issue by going to war! They couldn’t sit down and have a get together discussing the problems between slaves, because they would go back and forth arguing about slaves and sooner or later they’d both get made and it would go to war anyway.

  50. Overall there was no alternative because one side would have to give up their values. The south would’ve had to stop slavery (which obviously wouldn’t happen) on the other hand the Union would’ve had to get bossed around by a bunch of whiners who refused to reform and end slavery. So,no there was no alternative without someone seriously changing their beliefs.

(I’m sorry I blogged late I totally forgot and it won’t happen again!!!)
